How to use the decal size calculator
- Choose what you are decorating: a shirt, hoodie, baby bodysuit, tote or cap, a cup or mug, or a car or flat surface.
- Pick the size (XS to 4XL, youth, toddler or baby) and where the design goes: full front, left chest, full back, back of neck or sleeve.
- Read the recommended width, the usual range and how far down to place it. The drawing shows the decal on the blank at real proportions.
- Optional: upload your design (SVG, PNG or JPG) or type its width and height. The calculator sizes it to fit and gives you the exact size to type into Cricut Design Space.
- Download the paper test PDF, print it at 100% and lay it on your blank before you cut. Or download the size chart image to pin for later.
Your design never leaves your device: it is only read in your browser to work out its proportions.
T-shirt decal size chart
These are the full-front widths most heat transfer vinyl makers and print shops recommend for a unisex t-shirt. Most published charts use square designs. As a rule of thumb, a taller design can go up to about 1.4 times its width, as long as it ends a good 5 in above the hem.
| Adult size | Chest (flat) | Decal width | We suggest |
|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 16.5 in | 7–9 in | 8 in |
| S | 18 in | 8–9 in | 8.5 in |
| M | 20 in | 9–10 in | 9.5 in |
| L | 22 in | 10–11 in | 10.5 in |
| XL | 24 in | 11 in | 11 in |
| 2XL | 26 in | 12 in | 12 in |
| 3XL | 28 in | 12–13 in | 12.5 in |
| 4XL | 30 in | 13 in | 13 in |
Women’s fitted tees are narrower across the chest, and vinyl shops suggest 9–10 in for most women’s sizes (about 9 in on a small). Cutting one design for every adult size? Make it about 9–10.5 in wide so it works on small and large shirts alike.

Where to place a decal on a shirt
- Full front, adult: the top of the design 3 in below the bottom of the collar (3.5 in on 3XL and 4XL). Many people measure four fingers down.
- Full front, youth: about 2 in below the collar. Toddler: 1.5 in. Baby bodysuit: about 1 in, well clear of the snaps.
- V-neck: about 1.5 in below the point of the V.
- Left chest: a 3–4 in logo (3.5 in is the classic size) on the wearer’s left. Stahls, the heat transfer company, marks the spot 7.5–9 in down from the shoulder seam and 4–6 in over from the center. Youth logos are 2.5–3 in and toddler or baby logos 2–2.5 in; for those, the calculator scales the spot down from the adult guide.
- Full back: 10–12 in wide on most adult sizes (a little less on XS and S), with the top 3–4 in below the back collar. Youth backs take 7–9 in.
- Back of the neck: a small 1.5–3 in logo or name about 1 in below the collar.
- Sleeve: 2.5–3.5 in, with the bottom about 1.5 in above the sleeve hem. On a long sleeve, a design running down the arm is 2–3 in wide and 11–14 in long.
To find the center, fold the shirt in half lengthwise and press the fold with your heat press or iron. Line the middle of the carrier sheet up with the fold.
Hoodie decal size
Adult hoodies take a 10–12 in front design (about 9.5 in on a small). Start it about 3.5 in below the neckline and keep it above the kangaroo pocket, because a design that runs over the pocket seam won’t press flat. Measure from where the design starts to the top of the pocket: that is your maximum height. The calculator estimates it from the hoodie size, but pockets vary, so check yours. On the back, lay the hood flat and start the design just under its point.
Decal sizes for tumblers, mugs and glass cans
On a cup, the height is what limits you: the decal has to fit the straight part between the lid and the base. As a rule of thumb, a front decal reads best when it covers about a third of the way around. The full-wrap sizes are the usual sublimation templates and print areas.
| Cup | Front decal | Full wrap |
|---|---|---|
| 20 oz skinny tumbler | 3.5 × up to 5.5 in | 9.3 × 8.2 in |
| 30 oz skinny tumbler | 3.75 × up to 5.75 in | 10.25 × 9.5 in |
| 40 oz tumbler with handle | 3.25 × up to 4 in | 10 × 7.5 in |
| 12 oz wine tumbler | 2.5 × up to 2.5 in | 7.5 × 3.25 in |
| 16 oz glass can | 3 × up to 3 in | 9.38 × 3 in |
| 11 oz mug | 3 × up to 2.75 in | 8.5 × 3.5 in |
| 15 oz mug | 3.25 × up to 3.5 in | 9 × 4 in |
The 20 oz, 40 oz, glass can and 11 oz mug sizes come from published charts and blank specs; the 30 oz, wine tumbler and 15 oz mug front sizes are scaled from those. Blanks of the same size vary by brand, so check yours with a tape measure or a strip of paper. For any other cup, choose Other cup in the calculator and type its height and width. For names on tumblers, a curved name looks lovely: try my curved text generator.
Car decal and bumper sticker sizes
The most common bumper stickers are 11.5 × 3 in and 9 × 2.5 in; 10 × 3 and 8 × 3 in are also standard. Rear window decals have no standard size, but 18 × 12 in and 12 × 12 in are the most popular. Measure the clear glass inside the black border, keep the decal at least 1 in inside it, and keep it out of the wiper’s path.
How to set the size in Cricut Design Space
- Upload your design and add it to the canvas.
- Select it and make sure the lock icon in the Size box is closed, so the proportions stay the same.
- Type the width the calculator gives you (or the height, if your design is tall). The other number updates by itself.
- For iron-on, turn on Mirror for that mat before you cut.

How far down from the collar does a shirt decal go?
Put the top of the design about 3 in below the bottom of the collar on adult shirts, 2 in on youth shirts, 1.5 in on toddler shirts and about 1 in on baby bodysuits. On a V-neck, go about 1.5 in below the point.
What size is a left chest logo?
3–4 in wide on adults (3.5 in is the classic), 2.5–3 in on youth shirts and 2–2.5 in on toddler and baby clothes.
What size decal for a 20 oz tumbler?
A front decal about 3.5 in wide and up to 5.5 in tall, or a full wrap of about 9.3 × 8.2 in for sublimation.
Should I print a test first?
Yes. Download the paper test, print it at 100% (check the 2 in line), cut it out and lay it on your blank. It takes a minute and saves a sheet of vinyl.
Is the decal size calculator free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, and your design stays on your device. You can use the sizes for anything you make and sell.
