How to make an envelope template
- Choose what you are making: a card and envelope together, just an envelope, or just a card.
- Type the size of your finished, folded card in inches, centimeters or millimeters, or tap a standard size like A2, A7 or Slimline. Making only an envelope? You can type the envelope size instead.
- Pick the flap: square, pointed or rounded. Add a liner, an inside writing panel, a window for a shaker card, or a name for the front.
- Check Will it fit? to see which paper and mat each piece needs.
- Download the SVG cut file for Cricut or Silhouette, the printable PDF to cut by hand, or the diagram to save on Pinterest.
Your settings stay on this device, so you can come back later and pick up where you left off.
Card and envelope sizes
Envelopes are a little bigger than the card, so it slides in without bending. The maker adds 1/4 in (about 6 mm) to the card size by default. Choose Snug (1/8 in) for flat cards, or Roomy (3/8 in) for cards with layers, ribbon or a shaker window.
| Card size | Folded card | Envelope (standard room) |
|---|---|---|
| RSVP | 3.5 × 5 in | 3.75 × 5.25 in |
| A2 | 4.25 × 5.5 in | 4.5 × 5.75 in |
| A6 | 4.5 × 6.25 in | 4.75 × 6.5 in |
| A7 (5 × 7) | 5 × 7 in | 5.25 × 7.25 in |
| A9 | 5.5 × 8.5 in | 5.75 × 8.75 in |
| Square | 5.5 × 5.5 in | 5.75 × 5.75 in |
| Slimline | 3.5 × 8.5 in | 3.75 × 8.75 in |
| Gift card | 2.125 × 3.375 in | 2.375 × 3.625 in |
A card folded in half is cut from a sheet twice as big: an A2 card with a side fold is cut from 8.5 × 5.5 in, which is half a sheet of Letter cardstock.
Which envelope flap should I choose?
- Square flap: the classic greeting card envelope. Neat and simple, and the easiest to seal with a sticker.
- Pointed flap: the elegant “Euro” flap you see on wedding invitations. It looks lovely with a liner or a wax seal.
- Rounded flap: soft and playful, good for baby showers, birthdays and kids’ cards.
Whichever flap you pick, the bottom flap overlaps the side flaps where you glue, and the top flap overlaps the bottom flap, so the envelope always closes.
How to cut a card and envelope with Cricut Design Space
- Download the SVG cut file (keep Score (Cricut) selected for the fold lines).
- In Design Space, click Upload, then Upload Image, and choose the SVG. It opens at the real size you made, so don’t resize it.
- Select the pink fold lines and change Operation from Basic Cut to Score.
- Select each piece together with its score lines and click Attach, so the scores stay in place on the mat.
- Click Make It. Cut the card from cardstock, and the envelope and liner from cardstock or patterned paper. Insert the scoring stylus or scoring wheel when Design Space asks.
No scoring tool? Cut the pieces, then press each fold line with a bone folder, an empty pen or the back of a butter knife against a ruler before folding.
How to fold the envelope
- If you made a liner, glue it in first: center it on the envelope with its score line on the top fold line.
- Crease all four fold lines, then fold the two side flaps in.
- Fold the bottom flap up. Put glue only on the parts that lie over the side flaps, and press.
- Slide your card in, fold the top flap down and seal it with a sticker, washi tape, a wax seal or a dab of glue.
What size envelope can I cut on a 12 × 12 mat?
Cricut cuts up to 11.5 × 11.5 in on a 12 × 12 mat. A flat envelope is a little more than twice as tall as the finished envelope, because the top and bottom flaps overlap across the front. So envelopes for A6, A7 (5 × 7) and slimline cards fit on one 12 × 12 sheet, and RSVP, A2 and gift card envelopes even fit on Letter cardstock. Envelopes for A9 cards and 5.5 in square cards are just over, so they need a 12 × 24 mat. For a square card on a 12 × 12 sheet, keep the card to 5.25 in or smaller and use the square flap with Standard room.
The Will it fit? list under the downloads checks every piece for you.
How to print and cut an envelope by hand
Download the printable PDF, choose Letter or A4, and print at 100% / Actual size (not “Fit to page”). Measure the 2 in check line at the bottom of the page to make sure the size is right. Cut the solid lines with scissors or a craft knife, score the dashed lines with a ruler, then fold.
If a piece is bigger than one sheet of paper, the PDF splits it over several pages. Trim one page along the grey edge, line the shapes up with the next page, and tape them together. For a one-piece envelope, it is easier to print the PDF on 12 × 12 paper or cut the SVG.

Frequently asked questions
Is the envelope template maker free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark, and everything is drawn in your browser. Nothing you make is uploaded.
Can I sell the cards and envelopes I make?
Yes. The templates are yours to use for gifts and for cards and invitations you sell. The fonts for the text are open-license (SIL Open Font License), so they are fine for selling too.
What paper should I use?
Use 65 lb to 80 lb cardstock for cards, and 65 lb cardstock or 100 gsm patterned paper for envelopes and liners, so the folds stay crisp without cracking. For an envelope with a big card inside, use a heavier paper.
Can I mail a handmade envelope?
Yes, as long as it is sealed well and the address is clear. In the US, square envelopes and envelopes with lumpy embellishments need extra postage, and envelopes need to be at least 3.5 × 5 in. Check with your post office for very small or very large sizes.
Why is my card too tight in the envelope?
Check that you didn’t resize the file in Design Space, and measure the finished card, including any layers. For layered or shaker cards, choose Roomy and download a new file.
Does it work with Silhouette?
Yes. Silhouette Studio Designer Edition and up opens SVG files. The fold lines come in as a separate color, so you can set them to a perforate or score setting, or use a scoring blade.
