Shadow boxes are the project that makes people ask, “Wait, you made that?” Every layer of cardstock sits a little further forward than the one behind it, so the scene looks deep and almost real.
They take a bit of patience, but there’s no tricky technique. Your Cricut does the hard part and you just stack the layers.

I rounded up 12 Cricut shadow box ideas, from personalized keepsakes to seasonal scenes for Halloween, Christmas and spring. Each one comes with the SVG file.

What You Need to Make a Shadow Box
Most shadow box SVGs are sized for an 8 x 8 inch frame. This is what I keep on hand:
- A deep shadow box frame: at least 1.5 inches deep so all the layers fit. Square 8 x 8 frames are the most common size.
- Cardstock (65 to 80 lb): one color per layer. Lighter cardstock cuts fine details more cleanly.
- 3D foam squares or foam tape: they add the space between layers that creates the depth.
- A LightGrip mat and a fresh fine-point blade: shadow box layers are full of tiny cuts.
- An LED strip light (optional): for designs made to glow from behind.
Number each layer in pencil on the back as it comes off the mat, so you don’t mix up the order.
How to Assemble a Layered Shadow Box
Start with the back layer and work forward. Stick foam squares around the edges and in a few spots in the middle, then press the next layer on top, lining up the corners.
For more depth, stack two foam squares between the front layers. Slide the finished stack into the frame without the glass if you want people to see every layer.

Cricut Shadow Box FAQs
What size frame do I need for a Cricut shadow box?
Most shadow box SVGs fit an 8 x 8 inch frame that’s at least 1.5 inches deep. Check the product page, since some come in other sizes.
What cardstock is best for shadow boxes?
A 65 to 80 lb cardstock cuts the fine details cleanly. Very thick cardstock can tear in small areas.
How do I keep the layers lined up?
Line up the outer edges of each layer with the one below before you press it down. All the layers in a shadow box SVG are usually the same outer size.
Can I light up any shadow box?
Yes. Stick an LED strip around the inside edge of the frame. Designs with lots of white or open areas glow the best.
