A mailbox decal is one of the quickest Cricut projects with the biggest payoff. A little permanent vinyl and 20 minutes outside, and the first thing people see at your house looks brand new.
It’s also a sweet housewarming gift, because almost every design can be personalized with a family name.

I rounded up 13 Cricut mailbox ideas: family name and address decals, floral mailbox makeovers and a few paper mailboxes for Valentine’s Day and letters to Santa. Each one comes with an SVG file.
Tip: Want your family name to arch over the house number? Make it in our free Curved Text Generator, then upload the SVG to Design Space and cut it in permanent vinyl.
What You Need to Make a Mailbox Decal
Here’s what I use for every mailbox decal:
- Permanent outdoor vinyl: Oracal 651 or Cricut Premium Permanent Vinyl. Removable vinyl won’t last outside.
- Transfer tape: standard grip for glossy vinyl, so it lets go of the decal easily.
- Weeding tool and scraper: to clear the small pieces and press the decal down firmly.
- Rubbing alcohol and a lint-free cloth: to clean off dust and wax before you apply it.
- Measuring tape: to size the design to the side of your mailbox before you cut.
Bold, chunky lettering reads best from the street. Very thin script can be hard to weed and may peel sooner outdoors.
How to Put a Vinyl Decal on a Mailbox
Clean the side of the mailbox with rubbing alcohol and let it dry. Pick a mild, dry day, because vinyl doesn’t stick well when it’s very cold or wet.
Lay the decal on with transfer tape, starting in the middle and smoothing out toward the edges so it follows the curve. Burnish it well, peel the tape back slowly at a sharp angle, then press the vinyl down once more with your fingers.

Cricut Mailbox Ideas FAQs
What vinyl should I use for a mailbox decal?
Use permanent outdoor vinyl like Oracal 651 or Cricut Premium Permanent Vinyl. It’s made to handle sun and rain, while removable vinyl will peel outside.
How do I put a decal on a curved mailbox?
Start in the middle and smooth the decal out toward the edges with your scraper. That way it follows the curve without wrinkles or bubbles.
How big should the numbers on a mailbox be?
The USPS asks for house numbers at least 1 inch tall. Bigger, bolder numbers are easier to read from the street.
Can I put vinyl on a plastic mailbox?
Yes. Vinyl sticks well to smooth plastic and metal. It doesn’t hold as well on rough or textured surfaces.
How do I remove an old mailbox decal?
Warm it with a hair dryer for a minute, then peel it off slowly. A little adhesive remover takes off any sticky residue.
What paper should I use for a paper mailbox?
Use 80 lb cardstock so the mailbox holds its shape. Score the fold lines before you fold and glue it together.
