The engraving tip is one of the most underrated tools for the Cricut Maker. It scratches a design right into the surface, so the result is permanent and looks surprisingly professional.
Engraved acrylic is my favorite. Put it on an LED base and the whole design lights up.

I rounded up 15 Cricut engraving ideas, from glowing acrylic lamps and wedding keepsakes to engraved cards for the holidays. Each one comes with an SVG file that’s already set up for engraving.
My Top Cricut Engraving Picks
Tip: Want to engrave a name in a curve around a round blank? Our free Curved Text Generator makes arched text you can upload to Design Space and set to Engrave.
What Can You Engrave with a Cricut?
The engraving tip works with the Cricut Maker and Maker 3 in the QuickSwap housing. These are the materials it handles best:
- Acrylic sheets: clear acrylic engraves beautifully and glows on an LED base. Keep the protective film on while you engrave.
- Soft metals: aluminum, brass and copper blanks, like dog tags, bracelets and bookmarks.
- Leather and faux leather: great for keychains and patches.
- Plastic and anodized aluminum: the top layer scratches away to reveal a contrasting color.
Wood and glass are too hard for the engraving tip, so stick to the materials above.
How to Engrave with Your Cricut
Upload the SVG, select the layer you want to engrave and change its operation from Cut to Engrave. Tape your blank firmly to a StrongGrip mat with painter’s tape so it can’t shift.
Choose the right material setting, like Acrylic or Aluminum, then load the engraving tip. For a deeper look, rub acrylic paint or a paint pen into the engraved lines and wipe off the extra.

Cricut Engraving FAQs
Which Cricut machines can engrave?
Only the Cricut Maker and Maker 3 can engrave. You need the engraving tip with the QuickSwap housing.
Can a Cricut engrave wood or glass?
No. Wood and glass are too hard for the engraving tip. For glass, try etching cream with a vinyl stencil instead.
How do I make engraved lines stand out?
Rub acrylic paint or a paint pen into the lines, then wipe the surface clean with a damp cloth. On clear acrylic, an LED base makes the engraving glow.
Why does my engraving look faint?
Use the More pressure setting and make sure your blank is taped down firmly. A file made with thin engrave lines, not filled shapes, gives the best results.
